Manchester city; Hopeful or Hopeless after defeat?

Pep Guardiola’s side could get away with the odd poor performance for the final six months of last season but this time around it is a different story.

There are a couple of reasons to be optimistic for Manchester City on Saturday, amid the doom and gloom of an unexpected and thoroughly deserved defeat against Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium.
One is that the Premier League title is still handed out in May. The other is that the last time a team top of the table at Christmas didn’t go on to win the league was Liverpool five years ago. In fact, only twice in the past 10 seasons has a team not lifted the title after being top on December 25 and both times it has been Liverpool.
So that’s something to cling to as the bones are picked out of an uncharacteristically poor performance from the champions.

Manchester City's coach, Pep Gurdiola

The performance was indeed so disjointed there will be a forensic analysis of what went wrong. Especially set against the backdrop of Liverpool’s fine form and what seems to be an improvement week upon week.
Are the problems for City isolated to Saturday’s match - when Palace scored from their first two shots on target, one of them perhaps the goal of the season - or have they been signposted for weeks to come?
Just as conversations were being had that City had improved as a team upon last season, they have started leaking goals. From the joint best defensive record in Europe to one clean sheet in their last eight league games.
City have not quite been at their best in recent weeks and problems with form and fitness are at the root of it. This was especially true on Saturday.
They coped without De Bruyne well for his first long lay-off but they have seemed to miss him more so second time around, especially considering injuries to Sergio Aguero, David Silva and, particularly pertinent to Saturday, Fernandinho.
City have hardly been playing badly but there has to come a time when even City miss four world class players.
And form-wise, Kyle Walker has been struggling for a few weeks, while Nicolas Otamendi has not been as dependable as he became during last season.

Combine all of that and you have an outfit considerably less slick than last season’s record-breakers.
The worry as far as Saturday is concerned, alongside the absence of key players and poor form of two of the back four, is that City barely had any response to Palace’s goals.
The hosts started slowly (not for the first time) but found a way through thanks to Ilkay Gundogan’s header. Usually that would be enough to seal the three points. In fact, they would usually be confident of winning even if the visitors drew level, as they did when Jeffrey Schlupp fired in Palace’s first shot of the afternoon. That came after Aymeric Laporte and John Stones, an unconvincing central midfielder on the day, missed tackles and Walker was easily outfoxed.
Yet it was Palace who struck again, with the type of goal you can’t really fault - other than the fact Stones missed another tackle before Roy Hodgson’s men won the free-kick that was headed out as far as Andros Townsend, who absolutely leathered a volley into the top corner from more than 20 yards.

These things can happen in a game and City still had time to turn it around, especially with De Bruyne, Aguero and Riyad Mahrez on the bench. Aguero entered first, for Otamendi, but Palace struck again. Walker gave away a penalty after Townsend struck the post with a free header.
Aguero had no time to make an impact before it went to 3-1 but the biggest surprise was that he didn’t afterwards, either. De Bruyne came on for Fabian Delph as Pep Guardiola went for it but the onslaught never really came.
Palace sat back and City could not unpick them. There were barely even chances to unpick them, given there was so little structure to the game at this point that City’s huge amounts of possession did not add up to a concerted attempt at pulling their opponents all across the pitch.

Leroy Sane struck a post with a long-range free kick but that was it until De Bruyne scored with what he intended to be a cross. Gabriel Jesus put a header over the bar in stoppage time but you could hardly say a draw would’ve been a fair result, even if Palace’s goals had a feel of smash-and-grab about them.
Comparisons to last season are inevitable but not especially helpful, given the amount of injuries to key players and the overall run of good results.
This is hardly a crisis, and even if it were there would be legitimate reasons for it.
The biggest and most worrying difference compared to last season is that there’s a challenger this time around.
For the last six months of last season City could throw in the odd duff performance and it would make no difference.
This time, Liverpool’s presence ensures every result counts.

The Reds are top at Christmas, clear of City by four points, and the moods at the top two clubs could not be more different right now.
But there is a long way to go, and if any team can turn it around, it’s City. And history suggests that if any team can throw it away, it’s Liverpool.
Either way, we’re set for a fascinating second half of the season.

Man United defeats Newcastle to earn their fourth win in a row

The Norwegian threw on his two big-name replacements and was given immediate rewards as United beat Newcastle on Wednesday with two late goals. Whether it’s playing the opposition off the park or delivering the key decisions at the vital moment, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cannot seem to do any wrong right now. This wasn’t a vibrant attacking performance full of goals and showreel highlights like the trio which had preceded it, but Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Wednesday night gave further proof that Solskjaer has injected something new into his side’s make-up. In throwing on players as talented as Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez for the final half-hour, the United caretaker manager must have known there was half a chance his substitutes would deliver. But the former Everton man’s immediate opener, and then the involvement of both replacements in Marcus Rashford’s clinching second, would have delighted the man who made his name as a super-sub ...

Breaking: Man city could be expelled from Champions League

UEFA have confirmed Manchester City could face a Champions League ban, should allegations of financial manipulation be proved. Both UEFA and the Premier League are investigating City, after emails leaked by German publication, Der Spiegel appeared to show £59.5million reported as coming from sponsors Etihad airline, was actually from owners Abu Dhabi United Group. If proved, the allegations would amount to a breach of UEFA’s financial fair play rules and according to the European governing body’s head of independent Club Financial Control Body, Yves Leterme, could lead to the “heaviest punishment” for the Premier League champions. Speaking to Belgian outlet Sport and Strategy, Leterme said: “If it is true what has been written, there might be a serious problem. This can lead to the heaviest punishment: exclusion from the Uefa competitions. “If the information is correct, this possibly goes against truthful reporting. The financial fair play rules are based on a system of decl...

Roger Federer wins historical match with Serena Williams

Roger Federer emerged triumphant from a historic first meeting with Serena Williams in the Hopman Cup on Tuesday. But tennis was the true winner as two of the game’s greats treated fans worldwide to an unforgettable evening. Defending champions Switzerland sealed a 2-1 victory over six-times winners U.S. which left them bottom of Group B. But the result mattered little to over 14,000 fans in Perth and millions around the world who had eagerly awaited the contest. Federer and Williams, holders of a combined 43 singles Grand Slam crowns, won their singles matches to keep the mixed doubles clash alive. The deciding match then lived up to the hype it had generated as both players left the court with big smiles. The contest had been described by local media as the most anticipated clash involving men and women since 1973’s “Battle of the Sexes”. That was where Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in an exhibition match. While that meeting between 39-times major winner King and for...

Breaking- United sacks Mourinho

Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect," a statement read. "The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future. "A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager." Mourinho replaced Louis van Gaal in the United hotseat in the summer of 2016 and was tasked with leading the 20-time English champions back to the top of the domestic game after a barren three years since Sir Alex Ferguson's appointment. He started well, winning the Community Shield in his first match in charge before claiming the League Cup thanks to a Zlatan Ibrahimovic-inspired 3-2 win over Southampton. Form in the league was not as strong, however, with the Red Devils only able to finish in sixth place, though their season did end on a high as a 2-...

Mourinho rejects offer to return to his former club

Former Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has reportedly rejected an approach to take charge at Benfica. It was gathered that the Portuguese coach was linked with a return to Lisbon giants who are searching for a new manager after Thursday’s dismissal of its first team coach Rui Vitoria. Just like Mourinho, Benfica fired Rui Vitoria after a series of poor results for the team – he led to back-to-back Portuguese titles in 2016 and 2017. Before his successful spell with FC Porto, Mourinho had briefly managed Benfica in 2000 where was assistant to Jupp Heynckes before the German was sacked after the fourth week of the domestic season with the side languishing in seventh place. The former Manchester United gaffer was in charge for 9 league games but quickly left the club after a contract dispute with the recently elected president Manuel Vilarinho. However, The Times reports that the Lisbon club is hoping to tempt their former coach back to Estadio da Luz by offering him an i...

Pogba speaks about Mourinho after 5-1 win

Paul Pogba says Jose Mourinho improved him as a player and a person and thanked the former Manchester United manager, for the success they shared at Old Trafford. The Frenchman stopped to make a statement in the mixed zone, following the 5-1 win over Cardiff City on Saturday, after taking criticism for what some supporters have perceived to be a role in Mourinho’s sacking. “I know you’re waiting for something about Jose, about the result today. “Obviously, we are very happy with the result. We played well, the performance of the team was great and I know you want to ask me but, ‘Oh yeah with Jose.’ “With Jose, we won trophies and I want to thank him for that. Not everything worked well but things went well, we won trophies. “Winning trophies makes you improve as a person as well and that’s it. That’s the past. I want to thank him for that. “I’m sure all the players are now looking to the next game, the points, and we have to go back into and we want to go back to the top...

Chelsea completes the signing of Dortmund Striker, Christian Pulisic

Chelsea have signed Borussia Dortmund forward Christian Pulisic for 64m euros (£58m), but will loan him to the German club until the end of the season. The 20-year-old United States international, who was linked with Liverpool and Arsenal, joined Dortmund as a youth player in 2015. Pulisic has scored nine goals in 23 games for the US. “It was always Christian’s dream to play in the Premier League,” said Dortmund director Michael Zorc. “That certainly has to do with his American background, and as a result we were unable to extend his contract. “Against this background, we have decided to accept an extremely lucrative bid by Chelsea, given the low contract maturity.” Pulisic’s contract at Dortmund was due to expire in June 2020. .

Man city 2 Liverpool 1: City end Liverpool's unbeaten run

Leroy Sane's 72nd-minute goal has breathed life back into the Premier League title race, as Manchester City beat Liverpool 2-1. Leroy Sane's 72nd-minute strike proved decisive as Manchester City reinvigorated their title defence and ended Liverpool's unbeaten Premier League run with a crucial 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium. Roberto Firmino looked to have sealed a potentially vital point for leaders Liverpool in the title race when he equalised just past the hour, but Sane struck soon after, confirming the Reds' first league defeat of the season in their 21st game and moving City to second and within four points of the summit. Liverpool were mightily unlucky not to take an early lead when a defensive mix-up between John Stones and Ederson followed Sadio Mane hitting the post, but they survived and finished the first half well – Sergio Aguero netting in ruthless fashion. Firmino restored parity in the 64th minute and City initially looked rattled, as if they coul...

Morata, loosing hope or regaining hope?

Restored to the starting line-up for Wednesday's game at Stamford Bridge, the Spanish striker drew another blank to cast further doubt on his future It's hard not to feel sympathy for Alvaro Morata. He is immensely talented and is trying so hard to make a success of his Chelsea career but it is just not happening for him, with Wednesday night's stalemate with Southampton just the latest in a long line of frustrating outings for the Spanish striker. It is now 18 months since he joined the Blues from Real Madrid for £58 million (plus add-ons) and he is running out of chances to prove his worth. As ever with Morata, there were positive moments against Southampton, with a delightful dribble in the 17th minute probably the highlight. But despite going close on numerous occasions, he failed to score and it was clear long before the end of this dour 0-0 draw that the fans' patience is wearing thin. It's not that he played badly. He even managed to stick the ball in...

Liverpool 5 Arsenal 1: Liverpool handles Arsenal with an iron hand as Fermino scores hat-trick

Liverpool thrashed Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday, as Roberto Firmino scored his first Premier League hat-trick. Roberto Firmino was at his ruthless best as he scored his first Premier League hat-trick to inspire a 5-1 demolition of Arsenal at Anfield and put Liverpool nine points clear at the summit after Tottenham's defeat to Wolves. The visit of Unai Emery's men was seen as a potentially troublesome fixture, but the Reds made light work of them, with all of their revered front three finding the net in a devastating performance. A chaotic five-minute spell in the first half saw Ainsley Maitland-Niles put Arsenal ahead, before a quickfire Firmino brace turned the score around. Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah ensured a rampant Liverpool went into the break 4-1 up. Liverpool's pressure did not subside after half-time and Firmino completed his treble from the spot 25 minutes from time, rounding off a miserable day for the Gunners and increasing the heat on Manchester Cit...
